Did Jesus get buzzed?
I’m sitting at the MVD waiting for my number to be called bored out of my mind. So I thought I would pose the question that has been rattling in my mind the past few days. Did Jesus ever get a buzz?
I think we would all agree that Jesus drank. It’s hard to be accused as a drunkered if you never drink. It would be like accusing an starving Ethiopian of being a glutton. And we know Jesus never got drunk, because that would have been a sin. But what about that fuzzy area of preintoxication? Did Jesus ever get a buzz?
I had read a post from a fellow beer blogging brother (I’ll post a link when I find it again) that pointed out how he thought it was perfectly fine to get a buzz when drinking. He quoted a verse about wine making the heart merry or something like that. It was very interesting to me.
There is a clear point when you are drinking that you still have complete control of your functions, but the alcohol has brought an extra smile to your face. I don’t think it is odd that God created alcohol so it can bring joy. I think we are the ones that abuse it and take it the level that God never intended.
So did Jesus drink to the point that he got a buzz? Did he drink until he got that nice warm feeling inside? Did he drink to that point when it was a little easier to laugh at your friends dumb jokes? I know this might be blasphemous, but I have to know.
Update: The article that I read was from Puritan Pub. Go check it out. It has a great quote from Luther.

I think He did. Psalms 104 when speaking of God says
“14 He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for man to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:
15 wine that gladdens the heart of man,
oil to make his face shine,
and bread that sustains his heart. ”
Grass is meant for cattle, plants for men to cultivate, oil to make faces shine, bread to sustain…and wine to gladden the heart. And in Zechariah, God says to His people
“I will strengthen the house of Judah
and save the house of Joseph.
I will restore them
because I have compassion on them.
They will be as though
I had not rejected them,
for I am the LORD their God
and I will answer them.
7 The Ephraimites will become like mighty men,
and their hearts will be glad as with wine.
Their children will see it and be joyful;
their hearts will rejoice in the LORD. ”
As God saves His people, their hearts will be glad as with wine. So the joy we get from wine and alcohol, should be a small representation to the joy of our hearts from God saving and answering us. The problem is when that joy from wine replaces the joy of God. If the joy from alcohol, or the buzz, is a represenation and not a replacement, I think its ok

Of course he did - he was human and a wine or two later most people have a buzz.

I would agree with Kevin and Brandon. I think he did get buzzed. I don’t drink wine often, I usually stick with beer. However, when I do drink wine, after a couple of sips I can feel a slight buzz. And, like you said, “It’s hard to be called a drunkard, if you never drink.”
I also do not think it is blasphemous to talk about it. If Jesus did not want us to know that He drank, or if it was such a horrible thing to do, He simply would not have done so. Much in relation to your blog, I think God created alcohol for us to enjoy. Obviously, there are people that can not do so in moderation, but you get that with everything: food, caffeine, sex, or whatever the case may be. In the extremist society, in which we exist, I think moderation went out the window with “Super Size.”
I wrote “Is Drinking a Sin” on http://christianbeerconnoisseur.wordpress.com with a reference to that scripture - I am not trying to be conceited, just thought maybe that was where you saw it?
I updated the post…but here is the link to the post that I had read. It was at Puritan Pub. Brandon you were spot on.

Jesus was fully divine and fully human. He could not get drunk because of being divine. He was fully human so if he drank any quantity of wine it would of effected him as it did any other human. The question is if Jesus drank only a glass of wine with his meals? I could drink and never get a buzz if the only time I drank was just one drink at a meal. Did Jesus ever drink wine on a empty stomach. For me it don’t take a whole lot to feel a buzz without food to absorb the alcohol.
I enjoyed this thought provoking blog. Thanks! Great comments all around! This is probably one of the questions I will be asking when I meet Jesus one day.
Until then, I will choose wisdom and not try see how close I can get to the line.

ENOUGH GREG! This is crazy. You need to discontinue this site immediately. I was trying to find the Berean site and came across this horrific nonsense. I will be praying for your shameful self.
Greg, what a great thought. I sit here sipping down my last Sol and have spent the last 45 minutes thinking about this topic. I lean towards “probably” more than anything as Brandon and Kevin presented… and, well, why wouldn’t He have?

Hmmm…
I think it’s a semantic discussion. Like a few have said so far, a ‘buzz’ means different things to different people. It made Him happy (judges 9:13) I am sure.
Did winebibbers get buzzed? If so, Jesus probably did, as he was labeled by the religious leadership.

I would say no. I can’t find a biblical difference between being ‘Drunk’ and being ‘Buzzed.’
